The Vibe for Edition 15: Capturing the Zeitgeist
This year is a big one—fifteen years of light art in the city. The theme focuses on capturing a snapshot of our time—the “zeitgeist”—through the lens of light art. For this milestone, the festival has designed a brand-new route through the city, featuring unique artworks from local and international artists that reflect on Amsterdam and its people.
When to Go & Booking Hacks
- Dates: The lights are on daily from 26 Nov 2026 until 17 Jan 2027.
- The Big “Off” Button: A crucial tip for your itinerary—the artworks are switched off on New Year’s Eve.
- October 1st is Key: Tickets for all official canal cruises and guided walk experiences go on sale on 1 October 2026. They sell out fast, so set a reminder!
- The Anne Frank Rule: Just like our sofa/spare room, some things in Amsterdam must be booked way ahead, and the Anne Frank Huis is top of that list.
How to See the Lights
1. By Water (The Classic Experience)
The best view of the installations is from the canals, as many artworks are placed on or above the water.
- Heated Canal Boats: Perfect if you want to stay cozy. These are covered and often include a personal guide or audio commentary.
- Open Boats: Our personal recommendation for the photographers! You’ll get unobstructed views and blankets to keep you warm.
- Luxury & Drinks: If you’re feeling fancy, companies like Flagship offer cruises with unlimited mulled wine and snacks. For a more intimate, small-group vibe, check out Starboard.
2. On Foot
The walking route is roughly 6.5 kilometres.
- The App: Purchase the “Light Walk” via the festival app for €6.99. It includes a GPS route map, audio guide, and artist biographies.
- Foodwalk: You can level up your stroll by choosing the Foodwalk option, allowing you to collect bites and drinks from restaurants along the route.
3. By Bike (The “Very Dutch” Way)
If you want to see the art in 90 minutes, join a guided bike tour. Just a warning: if you haven’t ridden in 20 years, practice a little first so the locals don’t shout at you!.
Insider Tips for Your Stay
- The Amsterdam North Secret: Avoid the crowds at Central Station. Take the free F3 ferry (it only takes 2 minutes!) to Amsterdam North and start your cruise from the A’DAM Tower area.
- Stay Central: We always recommend a central hotel. Amsterdam is easy to get around when you know it, but for a short trip, you don’t want to spend half your night on a tram.
- Accessible Magic: The route is accessible, but keep in mind the historic centre has uneven pavement and steep bridges. Always check with boat companies about wheelchair access before booking.
