🗓️ The Dates
WorldPride Cape Town runs from 30 September to 14 October 2028 – a fortnight, like Amsterdam. Worth noting for anyone used to northern-hemisphere Pride season: early October is spring in the Western Cape, not autumn. Jacarandas, lengthening evenings, and the shoulder season before the summer crowds arrive.
🌍 Why It Matters
Cape Town Pride is one of Africa’s largest and longest-running Pride organisations, and the bid leans hard on something South Africa can claim that almost nowhere else on the continent can: a constitution with some of the strongest LGBTQIA+ protections anywhere in the world.
The organisers are explicit that this is not just a Cape Town event; it is being framed as a platform for LGBTQIA+ communities across Africa, many of whom live under far harsher law than South Africa’s. Expect the human rights strand to carry real weight rather than being a side room off the main party.

✈️ Starting to Think About a Trip
Two years out, there is no programme detail, no ticketing and no accommodation to book yet — so this is a diary-marking exercise rather than a planning one. What we would flag now:
- Cape Town is a long-haul flight from most of Europe – roughly eleven to twelve hours from Amsterdam, and usually overnight. Budget accordingly.
- Two weeks is a lot of Pride. Cape Town rewards a longer trip: the Winelands, the Cape Peninsula and the Garden Route are all within reach, and October weather suits them.
- Accommodation will go early. A city-wide festival in a city that already fills up in spring is a recipe for a squeeze.
