🇹🇭 Silom Soi 2 & Soi 4: Bangkok’s Gay Nightlife Explained

Bangkok

Bangkok’s gay scene has a centre, and it is two narrow lanes running off the same road. Get the difference between them and the city opens up. Miss it and you will spend your first night in the wrong one wondering what the fuss is about.

The road is Silom. The lanes are Soi 2 and Soi 4. They are a two-minute walk apart and they do completely different jobs.

Soi 2 and Soi 4: The Difference

  • Silom Soi 4 is the bar street. Open-fronted, chilled, tables on the lane, and where the evening starts. Some of these bars have been running for decades. This is where you go at nine.
  • Silom Soi 2 is the club street. Dance floors, drag shows, later hours and a harder energy. This is where you go at midnight.

The sequence matters. Locals do Soi 4 and then Soi 2, in that order, and if you arrive at Soi 2 at nine you will find it half asleep and conclude Bangkok is overrated.

Getting there: BTS Sala Daeng or MRT Si Lom, both of which put you at the top of Silom. The lanes are numbered off the main road and are a short walk apart.

Silom Soi 4: Where the Evening Starts

Telephone Pub

  • Where: Silom Soi 4, Bang Rak, Bangkok.
  • The Vibe: the grandfather of the lane and still going after more than thirty years. Indoor and outdoor seating, a karaoke lounge upstairs, decent food and a long daily happy hour into the evening.
  • Our tip: take an outside table. The whole point of Soi 4 is watching the lane, and Telephone has been the best seat in the house for three decades.

Balcony Bar

  • Where: Silom Soi 4, directly opposite Telephone.
  • The Vibe: open-air, relaxed, and known for aggressive drink deals. Between Balcony and Telephone facing each other across the lane, the two of them effectively are Soi 4’s early evening.

The Stranger Bar

  • Address: 98 Silom Soi 4, Suriya Wong, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500.
  • The Vibe: the drag bar, and the one to plan around. Bangkok drag is world class and this is where you see it properly rather than as a novelty between DJ sets.
  • Our tip: shows run to a schedule and the room is small. Turn up before the advertised time rather than at it.

Silom Soi 2: Where It Ends

DJ Station

  • Where: at the far end of Silom Soi 2, Bang Rak, Bangkok.
  • The Vibe: the most famous gay club in Thailand and the anchor of the whole street. Multiple floors, a nightly drag show, and a crowd that is a genuine mix of Thai and international rather than one or the other.
  • Practical note: the entrance is a small doorway near the Burger King at the top of the lane, and you pass through security and metal detectors on the way in. This is routine for Bangkok nightlife and not a sign that anything is wrong.
  • Our tip: it does not fill until well after midnight, and the drag show is the reason to be there rather than an interruption to the dancing.

The rest of Soi 2 is a short run of clubs either side of DJ Station, and on a busy night the lane itself functions as one venue with several rooms attached.

Practical Notes

  • Timing: Soi 4 from around nine, Soi 2 from around midnight. Closing times in Bangkok can shift depending on the district and the year, so do not assume.
  • Cover charges at the Soi 2 clubs usually include a drink. Carry cash for the door.
  • Silom is not the only scene. It is the tourist-facing centre and the best place to start, but Bangkok’s queer life extends well beyond these two lanes.
  • Be aware of “gogo” venues. Silom has commercial go-go bars alongside the ordinary bars and clubs, and they are a different proposition with different pricing. If that is not what you are looking for, the venues above are all straightforwardly bars and clubs.
  • Thailand legalised same-sex marriage on 23 January 2025, the first country in Southeast Asia to do so, which makes Bangkok a genuinely notable destination rather than merely a tolerant one.

Gay Bangkok: Your Questions Answered

Where is the gay area of Bangkok?

Silom, and specifically the two lanes off it: Soi 4 for bars and Soi 2 for clubs. BTS Sala Daeng and MRT Si Lom both drop you at the top of the road.

What is the difference between Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4?

Soi 4 is open-fronted bars with tables on the lane, and it is where the evening starts from about nine. Soi 2 is dance clubs including DJ Station, and it does not really begin until after midnight. Do them in that order.

Is there a security check at DJ Station?

Yes. The entrance is a small doorway near the Burger King at the top of Soi 2 and there are metal detectors. It is standard for Bangkok clubs and nothing to be concerned about.

Is Bangkok good for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Very. Thailand legalised same-sex marriage on 23 January 2025, the first country in Southeast Asia to do so, and Bangkok has one of the most established and visible queer scenes in Asia.

Where should I start on a first night?

An outside table at Telephone or Balcony on Soi 4 around nine, a drag show at The Stranger, then DJ Station on Soi 2 after midnight. That is the classic run and it works.

Where to Stay

Stay in Silom or Bang Rak. Both put you walking distance from Soi 2 and Soi 4, which is what matters at three in the morning when you would rather not be negotiating a taxi. Anywhere near Sala Daeng BTS or Si Lom MRT works.

Sathorn is immediately south, noticeably quieter, often better value, and still a short walk in. It is our pick if you want to sleep as well as go out.

A warning about Sukhumvit. It is the other major hotel district, it has its own scene, and it will look tempting on price. But it is several kilometres east of Silom and Bangkok traffic is genuinely not a joke. If Silom is why you came, do not book there.
