So, you are planning a sun-drenched getaway to South Florida’s ultimate playground?! Excellent news. From our home base in “Cramsterdam”, we love escaping the chilly Dutch winters for the heat, the multicultural rhythms and the liberating energy of Miami and South Beach.

With 18 years of travel together across more than 50 countries, we can confidently say that Miami is not merely gay-friendly. It is gay-fabulous. South Beach has been a queer haven since the 1970s and 80s, when LGBTQ+ pioneers helped rescue and revive the Art Deco district that everyone now photographs. That legacy lives on in a scene where queer identity runs straight through Latin, Caribbean and Afro-American culture rather than sitting apart from it.
Here is our full guide, with exact addresses for every venue: where to stay, where to drink, which stretch of sand is which, and one piece of context we think you should have before you book.
Travel Advisory: Please Read Before Booking
We would not be doing our job if we skipped this. In 2023, Equality Florida issued a travel advisory for the state, later joined by the Human Rights Campaign, following a legislative session that produced a series of laws restricting LGBTQ+ rights, including measures affecting healthcare, public education and venues hosting drag performances. That advisory has remained in place.
Our honest read, and it is only ours: Miami-Dade is not Tallahassee. Miami Beach is a long-standing queer city with an openly welcoming local government and a scene that has kept going throughout. We have never felt unsafe there. But the legal environment is set at state level, not city level, and that is worth understanding rather than discovering. Trans travellers in particular should read the current advisories before committing.
Check the current position with Equality Florida and the HRC, decide for yourself, and know that spending your money in queer-owned Miami businesses supports the community that is living with these laws every day.
The Star of the Show: Hotel Gaythering 🏳️🌈
When it comes to genuinely queer-focused accommodation, South Beach has a masterpiece. On the quieter western end of Lincoln Road, Hotel Gaythering is a gay boutique hotel inside a beautifully preserved MiMo, or Miami Modern, building.
- Address: 1409 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139.
- The Vibe: welcoming, local and stylish. Designed by the community, for the community, and it feels like it.
- The Gaythering Bar: you do not need to be a guest. Craft and seasonal cocktails, local IPAs, and a daily happy hour that locals actually turn up to.
- Themed nights: something on every night, hosted by a rotating cast of drag starlets. Karaoke and bingo, trivia where locals and tourists compete for a bar tab, and Drag Race viewing parties in season.
- The men’s sauna: on site, with day memberships available to non-guests. The obvious way to recover from the night before.
Andrew & Iain’s tip: the location is the underrated part. West Lincoln Road is far calmer than Ocean Drive but still a fifteen-minute walk from the beach and the bars, which means you can actually sleep.
South Beach Gay Bars and Clubs
1. Palace
- Address: 1052 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, FL 33139.
- The Vibe: high-energy, loud and celebratory. Open since 1988 and the only gay bar on Ocean Drive.
- The shows: fierce daily drag over lunch and dinner, plus the weekend drag brunches it is famous for. Performances routinely spill off the open-air patio and onto the pavement, which is half the entertainment.
- Our tip: go up to the rooftop bar for the view over the Atlantic and Lummus Park. And note it sits directly across from the gay beach, so it is the natural landing spot when you have had enough sun.
2. Twist
- Address: 1057 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139.
- The Vibe: “never a cover, always a groove”, and it has been delivering exactly that since 1993. Seven bars and multiple dance floors across a building that works like a labyrinth, with a different sound in every room.
- What to expect: drag shows through the week, resident DJs nightly, bigger guest sets at weekends, and a long daily happy hour with two-for-one drinks that locals plan around.
- Our tip: do not judge it from the first room. People walk in, find the wrong floor for their taste and leave. Go all the way up.
3. Wanderlust Cafe & Lounge
- Address: 1200 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139.
- The Vibe: LGBTQ+ owned and operated, serving American comfort food with an international streak. A good way to start an evening with food and a show rather than just drinking.
- The week: drag bingo on Mondays, karaoke Tuesdays, Baila Thursdays with free salsa and bachata lessons, and After Dark parties on Saturdays.
- Worth knowing: it is one of the newer additions to the strip, having opened in 2025 under a Miami Beach pop-up incentive scheme. Check it is still running before you build a night around it.
4. Kill Your Idol
- Address: 222 Española Way, Miami Beach, FL 33139.
- The Vibe: a queer-friendly dive bar with a fiercely loyal local following, on one of the prettiest streets in South Beach. Open since 2012.
- The highlights: no cover, famously cheap drinks, and an eclectic run of live music from local indie and touring punk through to serious DJs. Colossal Karaoke on Thursdays.
- Our tip: this is the antidote if Ocean Drive has worn you down. It is where you go when you want a drink rather than a spectacle.
Beyond South Beach: Wynwood and Coral Way
South Beach is the historic heart, but Miami’s queer scene long ago spread across the causeway. Both of these need a short taxi or rideshare, and both are worth it.
R House, Wynwood
- Address: 2727 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33127.
- The Vibe: drag-and-dine taken to a spectacular level, run by Chef Rocco Carulli and his husband and business partner Owen Bale, in the middle of Miami’s warehouse art district.
- The programme: weekend drag brunches presided over by resident drag godmother Athena Dion, themed drag dinners on Friday and Saturday nights, and the room turning into a late dance floor afterwards.
- Our tip: book the brunch well ahead, and give yourself an hour beforehand to walk the Wynwood Walls and the surrounding murals. Doing R House without seeing Wynwood in daylight is a waste of the trip across.
Azucar Nightclub
- Address: 2301 SW 32nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33145, just off Coral Way, west of Little Havana.
- The Vibe: the Latin LGBTQ+ clubbing experience, and genuinely different from anything in South Beach. Resident drag artists perform in a proper theatre setting rather than on a bar-top.
- What to expect: cabaret revues, drag pageants including the annual Miss Azucar, and DJs mixing Latin, house, pop and reggaeton to a packed floor.
- Our tip: this is the single best argument for leaving the beach. If you only make one trip off South Beach at night, make it this one.
Roving Parties and After-Hours
Two fixtures that move around, so check current listings rather than turning up on our say-so:
- Midnight Service, a roving LGBTQ+ party series that pops up at smart Wynwood venues, including daytime pool parties and late sets.
- LPN!, the Saturday after-hours, which starts at 5:30am when everything else has closed. Pack sunglasses for the walk out, and be honest with yourself about whether you are that person this trip.
The Beaches 🏖️
12th Street Beach, South Beach
- Where: Ocean Drive at 12th Street, opposite Palace.
- The Vibe: the undisputed centre of Miami’s gay beach scene. Rainbow flags, music, and a busy, friendly crowd, especially at weekends. Not a quiet beach and not trying to be.
- Our tip: the whole day works as a loop. Beach, cross the road to Palace for a drink, back to the sand. That is the South Beach rhythm and it is very hard to improve on.
Haulover Beach
- Address: Haulover Park, 10800 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33154, about twenty minutes north.
- The Vibe: Miami’s only legal clothing-optional public beach, relaxed, body-positive and notably LGBTQ+ welcoming.
- Important practical detail: the clothing-optional stretch is the northern third of the beach, roughly between lifeguard towers 12 and 16. It is clearly marked. Walk to the right section rather than undressing where you land.
- Hours: the park generally runs from 8am to sunset, and there is paid parking.
South Pointe Park Pier
- Where: the southern tip of South Beach, at the end of Washington Avenue.
- Why go: not a scene, just the best sunset walk in the city. Watch the cruise ships slide out of Government Cut while the skyline goes pink behind you. Our favourite hour in Miami.
Andrew & Iain’s Miami Tips 📣
- Pace yourself. Between pool parties, beach sessions, drag dinners and a 5:30am after-hours, Miami is a marathon. Nobody does all of it and the people who try lose two days.
- You will need rideshares. South Beach is walkable, but Wynwood, Coral Way and Haulover are not. Budget for it, and note surge pricing after 2am is brutal.
- Consider Mid-Beach. If Gaythering is full, Circa 39 in Mid-Beach is a stylish, social and genuinely welcoming boutique option with a relaxed pool and better value than Ocean Drive.
- Support queer-owned businesses. The Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce is one of the most active in the US. Look for MDGLCC-certified restaurants, shops and services and put your money there.
- Season matters. Winter and early spring are glorious and busy. Summer is hot, humid and cheap, and hurricane season runs June to November. December to April is the sweet spot.
Gay Miami: Your Questions Answered
Where is the gay beach in Miami?
12th Street Beach in South Beach, on Ocean Drive at 12th Street, directly opposite Palace. For clothing-optional, go north to Haulover Beach and use the northern third between lifeguard towers 12 and 16.
What is the best gay hotel in Miami?
Hotel Gaythering at 1409 Lincoln Road is the standout gay hotel, with its own bar and men’s sauna. Circa 39 in Mid-Beach is the best gay-friendly alternative if it is full.
Where is the gay area of Miami?
South Beach, and specifically the blocks around Ocean Drive, Washington Avenue and the western end of Lincoln Road. Wynwood and Coral Way host the other major venues and need a rideshare.
Is Miami safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?
Miami Beach is a long-established queer destination with a welcoming local scene, and in our experience it feels entirely comfortable. That sits alongside a state-level travel advisory issued by Equality Florida and the Human Rights Campaign over Florida’s LGBTQ+ legislation. Read the current advisories, particularly if you are trans, and make your own call.
Where is the best drag brunch in Miami?
Palace on Ocean Drive for the classic South Beach experience with the show spilling onto the pavement, or R House in Wynwood for the bigger, wilder production. Both need booking at weekends.
When is the best time to visit gay Miami?
December to April for the weather. Summer is cheaper but hot, humid and inside hurricane season, which runs June to November.
Where to Stay
South Beach puts you inside everything, and the western end of Lincoln Road around Hotel Gaythering is the sweet spot: walkable to the bars and the sand, but off the Ocean Drive noise. Mid-Beach is calmer and better value with a short ride in. Staying in Wynwood suits you if the art and the food matter more than the beach.
We have travelled the world hand in hand, but the warm, Latin-infused magic of Miami Beach keeps pulling us back. Pack your swimwear, book the flight, and we will see you on Lincoln Road.
