Sitges has one of the most concentrated gay nightlife scenes in Europe, and the whole thing fits inside about 400 metres. You can walk from one end to the other in five minutes, which is precisely why nobody ever does: you get about forty metres before you run into someone you met at the beach.

It has a centre, and it has a name that no map will tell you. Here is how the gay village is actually laid out, bar by bar and street by street.
Judgement Square: The Centre of Everything
Officially it is Plaça de la Indústria. Nobody calls it that.
Generations of gay visitors have known it as Judgement Square, and the name is entirely earned. The square is small and ringed with bar terraces that all face inward, so everyone sitting down is looking at everyone walking through, and everyone walking through knows it. It is the gay catwalk of the Mediterranean and it has been running the same performance for decades.
The square comes alive from mid-afternoon, which is unusual and one of the nicest things about Sitges. People come straight off the beach, order a drink, and stay until dinner. It is at its best somewhere around 7pm with the light going gold.
Our advice for first-timers: do not walk through it briskly on your first evening trying to find somewhere better. Sit down at the first terrace with a free chair and let the evening come to you. That is the entire mechanism of Sitges.
How the Gay Village Is Laid Out
Three connected pieces, and once you have this you cannot get lost.
- Plaça de la Indústria, or Judgement Square. The social anchor. Afternoon into late evening.
- Carrer de Joan Tarrida. Runs off the square, pedestrianised, and densely packed with venues. Known as Bear Alley during Bears Week. This is the main strip.
- Carrer Bonaire. Connects onward, and this is where the later-night places concentrate. It also runs down to the seafront, which is where the Bear Village sets up in September.
A typical night moves in that order: terrace on the square from six, bars on Joan Tarrida from ten, Bonaire and the clubs from one.
The Bars
Parrots Pub
On Judgement Square, and more than thirty years old. The street terrace faces the catwalk and it is the unofficial social hub of the entire village from late afternoon to midnight. If someone says “meet you at Parrots”, no further detail is required. This is the single most useful address in gay Sitges.
El Horno
The bears headquarters, and home of the Bears Sitges Club, the organisation behind Bears Sitges Week. Small dark room, lively street terrace, and a notably warm no-attitude crowd. You do not need to be a bear to drink here.
Bears Bar
Does what the name suggests, with a terrace overlooking the stretch locals call Bear Street. Busy year-round and heaving in September.
The Rest of the Strip
Along Joan Tarrida and around the square you will also find Runway, Man Bar, Industry, Bukkake, Cox, Bitch Bar and El Piano. They range from cheerful pub to distinctly cruisy, and the honest way to work out which is which is to look through the door as you pass. Nobody minds.
Scandal
The late one. When the bars on the strip start closing, this is where the night continues. Do not arrive early and expect a party.
When to Turn Up
- 4pm to 8pm: Judgement Square terraces. Straight off the beach, still in shorts. The most sociable part of the day.
- 8pm to 10pm: dinner. Sitges eats late but not Madrid-late.
- 10pm to 1am: the Joan Tarrida bars fill up and the street becomes the venue.
- 1am onwards: Bonaire and the clubs.
Seasonality matters more here than in a big city. Sitges is a small town and in deep winter a lot of venues close or cut their hours. From May to October everything runs. In January you will find a quiet seaside town with a handful of bars open, which is lovely but is not the Sitges of the photographs.

Where to Stay
Anywhere in the old town within a few streets of Plaça de la Indústria and you can walk home from everything. That convenience has a cost: the strip is noisy until the small hours and the buildings are old. If you want to sleep, take somewhere on the seafront or a couple of blocks back and accept a five-minute walk.
